James Moriarty is a flexible damage dealer, with good NP generation thanks to his second skill and three Arts cards. His flexibility comes in part from his critical absorption skill, team-wide ATK up, though his second skill’s 10 star requirement may pose a problem sometimes. Being single-target, Moriarty’s NP can do a significant amount of damage, and his first skill’s Invincibility pierce means that he will find little trouble from enemies’ Evasion and Invincibility skills.
Moriarty’s main weakness is that he lacks any sort of defensive function, and his triple-Arts deck leaves his damage potential somewhat lacking at times. Additionally, his second skill’s requirement means that the team would need to prepare more critical stars than usual.
Pros
Good NP gain.
Critical absorption skill makes for reliable critical hits in crucial turns.
Good buffs, both for himself and the team.
Cons
Lacks any defensive functions.
Second skill’s requirement makes it slightly tricky to use.
Third skill’s additional effect is somewhat situational.
No defensive option.
Strategies & Tips
Despite his Buster-type NP, Moriarty is best paired with Arts-oriented Servants, in order to make the most of his deck. He should be placed in critical-oriented teams, where his high natural critical absorption could be exploited as well as to ensure access to his second skill. In general, his NP-charging skill should be used as early as possible, and his other skills as needed. It is preferable to use his NP to form Brave chains, to make the most of his NP’s defense down. He is also a decent damage support unit for Evil units, thanks to his third skill.
Noble Phantasm
The Dynamics of an Asteroid is a Buster-type NP which deals damage to a single target. It also applies a defense debuff on said target, which is applied before it deals damage - meaning that it also benefits the NP’s own damage. Due to Moriarty’s QAAAB deck, this NP also serves another important role in his kit - that is, as a Buster first card to strengthen his Brave chains.
Benefiting his NP damage as well as his criticals, Merlin brings a lot of advantages for Moriarty. His produced critical stars also help ensure that Moriarty has access to his second skill most of the time, while his survivability benefits from Merlin’s heals and Invincibility skill.
Her critical star absorption hinders Moriarty little thanks to his first skill, and she provides a way for the team to survive longer fights. She also has a star generation skill, which increases Moriarty’s reliability. Best used for compositions focusing on Moriarty’s NP.
Provides critical stars and buffs, increasing Moriarty’s effectiveness as a damage dealer. His deck also helps Moriarty in gaining NP, though the team would still be lacking a hard defensive skill.
Evil Damage Dealer Servants
Jeanne d’Arc (Alter), Altria Pendragon (Alter), Vlad III, Shuten Douji These Servants benefit greatly from Moriarty’s third skill - even more so if his bond CE is equipped. His triple Arts deck also aids their NP generation in general, though his high critical absorption may prove to be a hindrance for some Servants.
Capitalizes on Moriarty’s good NP gain by making his NP hit much harder. Due to his deck, in regards of damage this CE type is more effective compared to Arts or Buster performance increasing CEs.
Boosting both his Buster and Arts cards’ performance, this type of CE gives a balanced performance increase, though the impact would be less compared to other CE types.
These CEs make the most of Moriarty’s natural affinity towards criticals, while benefiting other aspects of his kit as well depending on the second effect.
Especially useful for situations where Moriarty is used as a damage support for Evil allies. When combined with a maxed third skill, it gives said allies a significant 65% attack increase.

Upgrade Priority
Magic Bullet Shooter EX
Grants Moriarty Invincibility Pierce and increases his critical absorption for one turn. Thanks to the high percentages of this skill, it grants a significant effect even at level one, meaning that it has less leveling priority compared to other skills.
The Extremity of Spiderwebs A++
Charges Moriarty’s own NP gauge and increases his NP damage for 3 turns, at the cost of 10 critical stars. This skill is slightly tricky to use, as losing critical stars may mean reducing his chance to perform criticals on a given turn. As such, it may be a good idea to refrain from using this skill on his Brave chain turns.
Charisma of Wicked Wisdom A
While this skill has a bonus effect for Evil Servants, it unfortunately does not affect Moriarty himself - as he is usually the main damage dealer, it means that its additional benefits are more often than not wasted.

With a triple Arts deck, Moriarty has an easier time gaining NP, an advantage further emphasized by his second skill. In exchange, his lack of Buster cards leave him somewhat disadvantaged as a damage dealer - though this is somewhat made up with him also being eligible for a semi-supporting role.
