Merlin is a very clearly defined support caster with a versatile kit and few weaknesses beside the ones that casters like him face by default. His kit on offense grants teams heavy on buster, buffs that can shred through bosses, while on defense he can be overwhelming enough to make boss stages look like easy mode was turned on.
His base stats aren’t great at first glance, although he has the highest HP amongst all the caster he suffers from having the lowest attack amongst all the casters too. However, it has to be said that his stats are great for a support type servant whose job isn’t to deal damage but to stay on the field to aid his team.
Merlin NP generation is great, although his arts card make his NP generation average for a caster but because of the hit counts in his Quick and Buster cards, he can gain quite a chunk of NP even without his AAA chain. He also has two passive skill that aids his NP gain as “Mixed Blood” offers him 5% NP charge each turn while “Territory Creation” grants more damage to his arts cards therefore helping his NP gain. His Crit star generation is respectable considering he is a caster, offering around 20 stars or so with his QAB or ABQ chains.
Merlin skills are undoubtedly a huge reason why he is so sought after, his first skill is really dreamlike as it’s name puts it. It grants a flat attack buff to the team while granting them a solid 20% NP charge. His second skill offers him his whole team invincibility for a turn while giving them a good Crit star generation buff as well however this skill is useless if enemies have pierce or insta death. His last and final skill grants is a buster buff giving a unit a buster performance buff while also increasing the unit’s critical damage and Max HP.

Strategies & Tips
Merlin is so versatile that he can be placed into almost any team, however because of his low attack and his third skill, placing him into a team that has a servant that can deal damage using buster cards will make sure the team is using merlin to his fullest potential.
Noble Phantasm
Merlin reproduces a land full of hope, a utopia in which he resides in till this day, full of blooming flowers and boundless sky. Granting his team HP recovery and NP charge of 5% for 5 turns, this NP is how Merlin is able to sustain a team.
Emiya is a great fit with merlin as his deck can help both of them get their NP up as well as his Buster type NP can utilise merlin third skill buster effect. Add the fact that most archer have “Independent Action” which grants them more crit damage will allow him to deal tons of crit damage with his NPAB chain.
Jeanne D’arc (Alter) is already considering one of the best damage dealer in the game, pairing that with the fact she has sustain with merlin is scary but a buster buff that also add critical damage up is just a whole other level of horror, need i say more?
If Crit damage satisfy you then ozymandias is a servant that you should pair with merlin, especially if you have Fragments Of 2030 on him. Ozymandias can absorb and use those stars very well, pairing him with merlin is gonna be Crit damage haven.
This is undoubtedly the support duo that all player can dream of, it is buff city for the servants beside these two on the team, not only do they both have three arts cards to gain NP but with just their skills you can get 70% NP on servant without anything else.
Buster Servants
Any buster servants would pair well with him as not many of them have good sustain and all of them can use attack and buster buffs to deal more damage as well.
Unit gains 8% NP each turn This pairs very well with merlin as with his passive you can get 13% NP charge every turn without attacking at all thus making this ideal for teams that have a low arts card count.
Gain 8 critical stars each turn Looking at Merlin’s crit star generation alone, he can reliably get 20 Crit stars with a brave chain, give or take a few. Pairing this with his overcharge effect he can get 30 plus Crit stars reliably and consistently, this CE can serve as a sort of Crit star generator. We cannot overlook that this can also be used if he is placed in a crit team as well for the team to crit more reliably.
Increase Arts Card effectiveness by 25% Pairing him with an arts team would mean that he can use his arts cards more often thus having this CE on him would serve him well in a team like that.
Increases your NP Gain by 25% Divine banquet is more easier obtainable by players and it can serve the same purpose as “Formal Craft” thus i would recommend it on merlin if you do not have any other CE that serve a similar purpose as the other ones mentioned before.
When equipped to Merlin (Caster) only, increase Buster Card effectiveness for all allies by 10% & Critical Strength by 15% while on the field.

Upgrade Priority
1=2>3: This skill upgrade priority is useful when you do not have a buster servant, hence his third skill will have the last priority. You could upgrade the second skill before the first if your team lacks much defense, but this is debatable and really depends on the type of team he is placed in.
1>3>2: This path of upgrading your skill is the way to go when you have a proper buster servant to use with merlin like Jeanne d’arc (Alter) as her NP is a buster card and she can even do her NPBB chain, thus Merlin third skill can be used fully in this scenario.
Dreamlike Charisma A+
This skill grants his team on the a flat 20% NP buff while also giving them a 20% flat attack buff at max level. This is super useful since merlin has low damage and also it help charge his NP which is extremely Important for sustain if he is the only support on the team.
Illusion A
This skill is merlin’s only defensive skill, prioritising this skill can be useful when merlin is your only support and if your team cannot survive an NP attack from the enemies. However as mentioned later into the game, bosses and enemies have pierce or insta death making this skill sometimes useless.
Hero Creation EX
As stated before, this is very useful for servants that uses buster cards for damage however if you are not using anyone that does damage using their buster cards, prioritising this skill doesn’t serve much of a purpose even considering the HP buff.

Merlin deck is very arts focused as can be seen by the cards in his deck, aside from his first active skill and his third passive skill on offense there is no other way to get his gauge up thus you will want to use his arts cards as often as you can.
