Xuanzang is a single-target damage dealer Caster, highly notable for her skill, which fills her NP gauge by a large amount. This enables her to charge her NP quickly, and even perform an instant NP in certain situations. She also possesses a decent amount of team support functions, accessible via her second and third skills.
On the other hand, her Taunt is rather hard to make use of in crucial situations, as she cannot reliably tank Noble Phantasms without external help. Additionally, her NP’s critical down only lasts for one turn, which makes it less reliable in harder fights.
Pros
Highest-damage single target NP among Casters.
Fast NP charging.
Decent team support function.
Cons
Buster-type NP reduces its spammability.
Low damage multiplier.
Needs additional setup to fully benefit from her kit.
Strategies & Tips
Xuanzang is generally used as a primary damage dealer against Assassin bosses. Able to support her team to some extent, she is best used with supporting Servants able to maximize her damage. Her NP charge skill should be used early on in a fight, so that she may potentially use it a second time. Taunt should generally be used on crucial turns, although it is not advised to use it on the opponents’ NP turn without an external defensive buff.
Noble Phantasm
Five Elements Mountain : Palm Of The Buddha is a Buster-type single target Noble Phantasm which applies a 1-turn critical chance debuff on the target. Post-interlude, its damage becomes rather high, although it is still to some extent affected by Casters’ low damage modifier and Xuanzang’s low NP buff percentage.
Although Xuanzang largely loses out on the critical side of Merlin, she still benefits quite a lot from his invulnerability, heals, NP gauge increase and damage buffs. Her Taunt also proves more useful when paired with Merlin, as she can use it to protect him from threatening opponents.
Xuanzang’s taunt finds use with Nightingale even more so than with Merlin, due to her Berserker class. Aside from the obvious Buster buff, Nightingale’s class also allows her to increase the team’s overall damage.
Shakespeare’s third skill allows Xuanzang to perform a Noble Phantasm on the very first turn, even without starting NP Craft Essences. Additionally, Shakespeare’s low HP is mitigated somewhat with her Taunt, lessening his vulnerability while his Invincibility buff is down.
This is undisputedly the best Craft Essence for Xuanzang - although her first skill means that she scales rather worse with additional NP buffs, their high percentage more than makes up for it.
Grants bonuses to her one normal Buster card aside from her NP; however, the NP’s damage increase pales when compared with NP damage Craft Essences. As such, these should only be used as alternatives.

High-Speed Sutra Chanting
Charges Xuanzang’s NP gauge and increases her NP damage for one turn. This skill, above all others, forms Xuanzang’s defining trait, which is that she is able to spam her NP despite its Buster-type.
Bewitching Rosy Cheeks A
Attracts the attention of all enemies to Xuanzang and reduces damage taken for one turn. This skill is fairly situational, as it has a fairly long cooldown, and also due to the fact that Xuanzang possesses no hard defensive skill. As this skill is more of an utility, it should be leveled last among her three skills.
Xuanzang’s Teachings A
Increases the party’s NP and star generation for three turns, as well as granting them debuff immunity for one turn. Although debuff immunity and star generation are rather situational depending on the opponents and party composition, respectively, NP generation increases Xuanzang’s own performance. As such, this skill should be leveled second.

Xuanzang’s QAAAB deck aids her overall NP generation, allowing her to perform her Noble Phantasm rather consistently even outside of her first skill. On the other hand, having only one Buster card means that she cannot perform an NP Buster brave chain, though it is no great loss as due to Casters’ low damage modifier and her lack of critical functions.
