This review features the annoying pest in Camelot known by the name as The knight Gawain of the round table. Most players should be familiar with the trouble Gawain has given when he possesses the holy grail, he has massive HP making him very hard to kill plus he can deal damage which can easily wipe your team. Unfortunately we can only dream about DW giving us such a Gawain.
Gawain base stats are a clear indication that he is unlike the knight we see in the story. He sports the lowest HP amongst all the 4* saber, his Attack compensate for his low HP as it is second to only his King Artoria (Saber Alter), making him a very offensive oriented servant. His generation stats are great for a saber on paper, but due to his deck which holds only one Quick and Arts card coupled with their low hit counts, his NP and Crit star generation feels really lackluster in game.
For skills, he offers pretty solid offensive buffs while also giving him some hard sustain in the form of a guts skill. His skill “Numeral of The Saint EX” is excellent for damage, not only does it give him a “charisma A” damage buff but also a Buster Performance boost under certain battle conditions. His second skill is the same “Charisma” skill found on Saber alter which isn’t great for the team even at max level, but considering he has heavy Attack buffs from his first skill, this is quite decent. Lastly we have his third skill “Belt of Bertilak EX” which increases his NP gauge, gains star and most importantly his only defensive tool which is a self guts status for 1 turn.
Pros
Heavy Offensive kit.
High damage with Buster Cards.
High Attack Stats.
NP can seal skills and burn.
Cons
Only one defensive tool.
Guts status only for 1 turn.
Weak “Charisma” Buff.
Low HP stats.
Berserker servants are better for damage.
Strategies & Tips
Gawain kit is very offensive minded servant so there is two route to go with him, the first is a Buster team that will make use of his deck to deal tons of damage, the second is a team that grants him more sustain in a fight. The Buster team around him should consist of servants that have a high number of buster cards to abuse the damage buff when using a Buster chain, while the second option for him would be to pair him with servants such as Nightingale and leonidas to ensure we can use his damage long enough in a fight.
Noble Phantasm
Gawain Noble Phantasm is the sister sword of the infamous “Excalibur” which is an AOE Buster Attack that also inflicts a burn and a skill seal. Although the damage multiplier is very weak on paper, his high Attack stats and his heavy Attack buffs helps him to deal stupid amounts of damage. I also need to mention that the Burn effect is really good and is worth the overcharging as it is a lot of damage over time (25k over 5 turn at 500%).
Whenever a unit is heavy on Buster cards, Merlin will always be an option. Not only does he buffs his damage via his Attack and Buster buffs but he also provides sustain and defense too.
Buster buffs and heavy healing, this is what Gawain needs to excel. I wouldn’t choose Merlin over her as she doesn’t offer hard sustain like with Merlin’s second skill does she does a great job of helping Gawain.
Leonidas is essentially is a more attainable version of nightingale. However in some cases, he can even be greater than her as against single target NP bosses, leonidas can tank the hit for the team with his taunt and guts skill and still offer the Buster buff for Gawain.
Considering his deck with his NP has 4 Buster cards, this is a no brainer and should be the craft essence of choice for Gawain, there is no need for further explanation.
If you are a free to play player or if your party doesn’t have a lot of space then this option is great for you. This CE offers a decent Buster performance buff but since you can easily limit break, it can even gives some 4★ and 5★ Craft Essences a run for their money.
When equipped to Gawain (Saber) only, increase Buster Card effectiveness for all allies by 15% while on the field.

Upgrade Priority
1>3=2:
This upgrade order is great for both teams mentioned earlier as gawain first skill is extremely important for his NP and overall damage output hence it is undeniably the first skill to max. Whether to upgrade his second or third skill next is highly dependant on the team you are running him with, as more damage can never hurt with a buster team thus maxing his second skill next is a viable option. As for a more sustainable team, maxing his last skill will ease the defensive load off the support unit in the team and it can never hurt to gain NP faster as well.
Numeral of The Saint EX
When the Sun shines in the field, increase Buster performance for 3 turns. This is Gawain best Attack buff and even without the Buster buff, he can still dish out good damage, it is definitely worth upgrading on him.
Charisma E
This skill offers a bad attack buff to the party but gawain kit is so heavy on offense, this skill is just the icing on the cake and should be used for gawain alone. Essentially this skill is an extension of his first skill.
Belt of Bertilak EX
As mentioned before, this skill is gawain only defensive tool and since it is his only form of sustain, it isn’t bad at all to decrease the skill’s cooldown am i right?

A Buster heavy deck is great for an offensively heavy servant like gawain, not only can he profit from getting a NPBB chain but his kit overall is just loaded with damage. The drawback to this is that his Star generation is just plain bad even with his passive skill “Riding B” helping him.
